Huda Takriti (1990, Damascus) is a transdisciplinary artist currently based in Vienna. Her practice ranges from painting and drawing to video, sound, sculpture, and installation. Her works explore the relationship between history and politics, memories and counter-memories, and the construction of our own subjectivities. Takriti explores gaps in historical memory by merging personal and national narratives, and generating questions around them.

Takriti has participated in many international group exhibitions and festivals, including exhibitions (selected) at Universitätsgalerie im Heiligenkreuzerhof (Austria), Kunsthalle Wien (Austria), Afro Asiatisches Institut (Austria), [.Box] Video Art Project Space (Italy), STIFF Student International Film Festival (Croatia), Stiftung Mercator (Germany), Kunstraum Lakeside (Austria), Centre d’art Sa Quartera (Spain), Addaya Centre for Contemporary Arts (Spain), Krinzinger Lesehaus (Austria) and University of Applied Arts _ Die Angewandte (Austria).

She received the Kunsthalle Prize 2020 (Austia), Ettijahat Production Award, Laboratory of Arts, 7th Edition 2020 (Lebanon), Styrian-Artist-in-Residence fellowship 2016 (Austria) and BMUKK and Kulturkontakt Austria residency fellowship 2014 (Austria).

Artist statement

The general frame of my recent works engages with (hi)stories, memories and counter-memories and the various processes of archiving and imagining those forgotten and hidden narratives of the past. I am mainly but not exclusively, interested in looking at history as the question of knowledge and narration equal to the question of power.

I intend to approach each artwork as an opportunity to conduct research and to work across disciplines. Whether the artwork turns out to be a video installation, a film, a photograph or a text is a factor left undetermined at the beginning of my research. In this respect, I use different disciplines as mediums and tools to help me best reflect my thoughts on the topic and concept in question.
